August's birthstone is a tradition that traces back to the breastplate of Aaron described in Exodus, where twelve stones represented the tribes of Israel. The modern calendar mapping was standardized in 1912 by the National Association of Jewelers (now Jewelers of America) and remains the reference list used across most of the English-speaking world. About this stone

Peridot is the gem variety of olivine, a magnesium-iron silicate that crystallizes deep in the earth's upper mantle and is delivered to the surface by basaltic volcanism. The world's oldest documented deposit is Zabargad island in the Red Sea, mined for at least 3,500 years, where ancient Egyptians called it the gem of the sun. Some peridot reaches the earth from space, embedded in pallasite meteorites that fall as iron-stone hybrids. The stone is 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale, durable enough for daily wear, with a distinctive olive-to-yellow-green color from its iron content. Curated by a certified gemologist.
