The symbol

Peridot has been mined for over 3,500 years on the island of Zabargad in Egypt's Red Sea, the oldest continuously worked gemstone mine known to history. As August's birthstone, it is long associated with light, warmth, and the gold of late summer.

About this stone

Peridot is the gem-quality variety of olivine, a magnesium-iron silicate. It is one of the few gemstones known to form deep in the earth's mantle, and has also been found in meteorites called pallasites, giving it confirmed extraterrestrial origin. Curated by a certified gemologist.

Care and wear

Peridot is suited for daily wear but is softer than aquamarine or sapphire. Remove before strenuous activity. Clean with mild soap and warm water. Avoid ultrasonic and steam cleaners.

Common questions

What month is peridot the birthstone for? August.

Is peridot the same as emerald? No. Peridot is olivine; emerald is beryl. They are entirely different minerals that happen to both produce green gemstones.
