The symbol

May's birthstone is a tradition that traces back to the breastplate of Aaron described in Exodus, where twelve stones represented the tribes of Israel. The modern calendar mapping was standardized in 1912 by the National Association of Jewelers (now Jewelers of America) and remains the reference list used across most of the English-speaking world. About this stone

Emerald is a variety of beryl, the same mineral family as aquamarine, colored vivid green by trace chromium and sometimes vanadium that absorb red light and transmit green. The earliest documented mines lay in Egypt's Eastern Desert, where production stretched from roughly 1500 BC into Roman times, and where Cleopatra is said to have favored the stone above all others. Most natural emeralds contain internal fractures, called jardin in the trade, treated with cedar oil to improve clarity. Care and wear

Emerald is sensitive to mechanical shock, sudden temperature change, and harsh chemicals. Remove before exercise, swimming, gardening, or applying lotions and perfumes. Clean with a soft, damp cloth and warm water only, never ultrasonic or steam cleaners.
