The symbol
Taurus is a fixed earth sign ruled by Venus. Its glyph is the bull, descended from the Cretan and Egyptian sacred bulls, including the Apis cult of Memphis where the living bull was treated as an oracle. Born between April 20 and May 20, Taurus carries the full strength of mid-spring, the season of growth, sensuality, and the cultivation of value. Across traditions Taurus is associated with steadfastness, sensual presence, and the patient work of building something worth keeping.
About this stone
Mexican fire opal is a transparent to translucent variety of opal mined chiefly in the high desert of Querétaro and Jalisco, where volcanic activity left silica-rich hydrothermal pockets. Unlike precious opal, fire opal shows body color rather than play of color, ranging from honey yellow to deep orange-red from trace iron oxide. The stone is 5.5 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale, softer than most jewelry gems, and contains a small percentage of structural water. The Aztec and Mayan peoples called it quetzalitzlipyollitli, the stone of the bird of paradise. Curated by a certified gemologist.
Care and wear
Fire opal contains structural water and is sensitive to heat shock and dehydration. Remove before exercise, swimming, or prolonged sun. Clean with a soft, damp cloth only, and avoid ultrasonic cleaners, steam cleaners, and harsh chemicals.
