Mexican fire opal is a transparent to translucent variety of opal mined chiefly in the high desert of Querétaro and Jalisco, where volcanic activity left silica-rich hydrothermal pockets. Unlike precious opal, fire opal shows body color rather than play of color, ranging from honey yellow to deep orange-red from trace iron oxide. The stone is 5.5 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale, softer than most jewelry gems, and contains a small percentage of structural water.
