The symbol

September's birthstone is a tradition that traces back to the breastplate of Aaron described in Exodus, where twelve stones represented the tribes of Israel. The modern calendar mapping was standardized in 1912 by the National Association of Jewelers (now Jewelers of America) and remains the reference list used across most of the English-speaking world. About this stone

Sapphire is the blue variety of corundum, aluminum oxide colored by trace iron and titanium in just the proportions needed to produce velvet blue. The historical sources of fine sapphire are Kashmir, Burma, and Sri Lanka, the last of which has produced gems continuously for over 2,500 years. Most blue sapphire on the market today is heat-treated, an industry-standard treatment performed since at least the early twentieth century that deepens and stabilizes color. The stone is 9 on the Mohs scale, the second hardest gem mineral after diamond, and extremely durable. Curated by a certified gemologist.
