The symbol

October's birthstone is a tradition that traces back to the breastplate of Aaron described in Exodus, where twelve stones represented the tribes of Israel. The modern calendar mapping was standardized in 1912 by the National Association of Jewelers (now Jewelers of America) and remains the reference list used across most of the English-speaking world. About this stone

Pink tourmaline is the manganese-bearing variety of elbaite, a member of the chemically complex tourmaline group whose crystals can show different colors at different ends of a single specimen. The historical Russian deposits supplied stones to the imperial Romanov court, and the species was so prized that empress Catherine the Great's collection included tourmalines once thought to be rubies. Modern production comes chiefly from Brazil and Madagascar. Pink tourmaline is unusual among colored gems in that its color is essentially never enhanced, only cut and polished. The stone is 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale, durable enough for daily wear. Curated by a certified gemologist.
