The stone

Citrine is golden quartz; its name comes from the French citron, lemon. It has been worn as an affordable alternative to topaz for centuries and shares November with that stone. More in our gemologist’s guide to the twelve birthstones.

A gemologist’s note

Citrine that forms naturally with this color is rare, and much of the citrine sold today is amethyst that has been heated to turn golden. Either way it is quartz, a durable 7 on the hardness scale, and its warm color sits naturally in yellow gold.

Care

Citrine is quartz, a durable 7 on the hardness scale. Long exposure to strong sunlight can fade it. Clean with warm water, mild soap and a soft brush, then dry with a soft cloth. Take it off before swimming, cleaning with chemicals or applying lotion.
