About this stone's color
The image below shows the same alexandrite under two light sources. Alexandrite contains trace chromium that absorbs red and green wavelengths almost equally, so the stone reads green to teal in cool daylight and shifts toward purplish red under the warm light of an incandescent bulb or candle. The effect is sharpest when you move between full sunlight and candlelight, and it is the stone's signature property.

The symbol
June's birthstone is a tradition that traces back to the breastplate of Aaron described in Exodus, where twelve stones represented the tribes of Israel. The modern calendar mapping was standardized in 1912 by the National Association of Jewelers (now Jewelers of America) and remains the reference list used across most of the English-speaking world. Worn close to the body, a birthstone ring functions as a personal sign, the wearer's name on the calendar.
About this stone
Alexandrite is a variety of chrysoberyl that contains trace chromium, the same element that colors emerald and ruby. In daylight it appears teal to bluish green; under incandescent or candle light it shifts to a purplish red. The phenomenon was first documented in 1834 in the Ural Mountains of Russia and the stone was named for the future Tsar Alexander II. The lab-grown alexandrite set in this piece is chemically identical to natural alexandrite, grown atom by atom in a controlled environment, with the same crystal structure and color-change phenomenon. We chose lab-grown for this size because a natural alexandrite at gem quality typically retails for thousands of dollars per carat. Curated by a certified gemologist.
Care and wear
Alexandrite is 8.5 on the Mohs scale and durable for daily wear. Clean with mild soap and warm water, with ultrasonic or steam cleaners.
