The symbol

January's birthstone is a tradition that traces back to the breastplate of Aaron described in Exodus, where twelve stones represented the tribes of Israel. The modern calendar mapping was standardized in 1912 by the National Association of Jewelers (now Jewelers of America) and remains the reference list used across most of the English-speaking world. Worn close to the body, a birthstone ring functions as a personal sign, the wearer's name on the calendar.

About this stone

The Mozambique garnet variety set in this pendant is a pyrope-almandine blend, two of the six garnet species in solid solution, whose deep ruby color comes from trace iron and chromium. Garnet has been worn for nearly 5,000 years, with the oldest known jewelry dating to a Sumerian necklace from around 3100 BC. The name comes from the Latin granatum, meaning pomegranate seed, for the deep red of the most familiar variety. Mozambique production began commercially in the late twentieth century from alluvial deposits in the country's northeast. The stone is 6.5 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale, durable for daily wear. Curated by a certified gemologist.

Care and wear

Garnet is durable enough for daily wear. Remove before swimming in chlorinated pools or applying lotion. Clean with mild soap and warm water, dried with a soft cloth.
