The stone

Amethyst is purple quartz, colored by traces of iron and natural radiation in the earth. Its name comes from the Greek amethystos, “not intoxicated,” and ancient Greeks long associated it with a clear head. More in our gemologist’s guide to the twelve birthstones.

A gemologist’s note

Amethyst often grows with zones of deeper and lighter purple, so a small, well-cut stone like this one tends to show the most even color. Long exposure to strong sunlight can fade it, so store it away from a sunny windowsill. It uses the same stone as our February birthstone charm and necklace, so the pieces can be worn as a set.

Care

Amethyst is quartz, a durable 7 on the hardness scale. Bracelets take more knocks than necklaces, so take it off for workouts, housework and swimming. Polish with a soft jewelry cloth.
