The symbol

The five-point star is the oldest celestial symbol still in continuous use, long associated with guidance, hope, and aspiration. Pairing the star with opal links two phenomena of light: the fixed star at the top of the sky and the shifting play of color held inside an opal's hydrated silica structure.

About this stone

Ethiopian opal, also called Welo opal after the region where it is mined, was first discovered commercially in 1994 and has since become one of the world's most important opal sources. Unlike Australian opal, Ethiopian opal is hydrophane, meaning the structural water content can shift slightly with moisture, sometimes affecting the play of color temporarily. The stone is 5.5 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale and contains play-of-color from microscopic silica spheres that diffract light. The diamond accent above the opal was selected by a certified gemologist.

Care and wear

Ethiopian opal is sensitive to heat, harsh chemicals, and prolonged immersion. Remove before swimming, exercise, or applying lotions. Clean only with a soft, damp cloth; never ultrasonic, steam, or chemical cleaners.
