The stone

Zircon is a natural mineral, not cubic zirconia, the man-made diamond simulant. The oldest known crystals on earth, found in Western Australia, are zircons more than four billion years old. More in our gemologist’s guide to the twelve birthstones.

A gemologist’s note

Zircon has fire close to diamond’s because of how strongly it splits light into color. Its blue is produced by heating, a standard treatment, and blue zircon joined the December birthstone list in 1952. It uses the same stone as our December birthstone charm and necklace, so the pieces can be worn as a set.

Care

Zircon is 6.5 to 7.5 on the hardness scale and its facet edges can chip, so store it apart from other jewelry. Bracelets take more knocks than necklaces, so take it off for workouts, housework and swimming. Polish with a soft jewelry cloth.
