The symbol

February's birthstone is a tradition that traces back to the breastplate of Aaron described in Exodus, where twelve stones represented the tribes of Israel. The modern calendar mapping was standardized in 1912 by the National Association of Jewelers (now Jewelers of America) and remains the reference list used across most of the English-speaking world. Worn close to the body, a birthstone ring functions as a personal sign, the wearer's name on the calendar.

About this stone

Amethyst is a violet variety of quartz colored by trace iron exposed to natural radiation in the surrounding rock over geological time. The Greeks called the stone amethystos, meaning not drunken, and carved drinking vessels from it in the belief that it kept the wearer sober at symposium. Amethyst was treated as one of the cardinal gems alongside diamond, ruby, emerald, and sapphire until the eighteenth-century discovery of large Brazilian deposits made it abundant. The stone is 7 on the Mohs scale, durable and stable, though prolonged sun exposure can soften the color. Curated by a certified gemologist.

Care and wear

Amethyst is durable for daily wear. Avoid prolonged sun exposure to preserve color saturation. Clean with mild soap and warm water, or with ultrasonic cleaners.
