The stone

Citrine is golden quartz; its name comes from the French citron, lemon. It has been worn as an affordable alternative to topaz for centuries and shares November with that stone. More in our gemologist’s guide to the twelve birthstones.

A gemologist’s note

Citrine that forms naturally with this color is rare, and much of the citrine sold today is amethyst that has been heated to turn golden. Either way it is quartz, a durable 7 on the hardness scale, and its warm color sits naturally in yellow gold. It uses the same stone as our November birthstone charm and necklace, so the pieces can be worn as a set.

Care

Citrine is quartz, a durable 7 on the hardness scale. Bracelets take more knocks than necklaces, so take it off for workouts, housework and swimming. Polish with a soft jewelry cloth.
