The stone

Aquamarine is a blue variety of beryl, the same mineral family as emerald, colored by traces of iron. Its Latin name means “water of the sea,” and sailors long associated it with safe passage. More in our gemologist’s guide to the twelve birthstones.

A gemologist’s note

At 4mm, aquamarine shows a pale, clean blue rather than a deep one; that is the stone’s character, and against yellow gold it reads as a cool contrast. Like most aquamarine on the market, it may have been gently heated to remove green tones.

Care

Aquamarine is a hard 7.5 to 8 on the hardness scale. Clean with warm water, mild soap and a soft brush, then dry with a soft cloth. Take it off before swimming, cleaning with chemicals or applying lotion.
