The stone

Zircon is a natural mineral, not cubic zirconia, the man-made diamond simulant. The oldest known crystals on earth, found in Western Australia, are zircons more than four billion years old. More in our gemologist’s guide to the twelve birthstones.

A gemologist’s note

Zircon has fire close to diamond’s because of how strongly it splits light into color. Its blue is produced by heating, a standard treatment, and blue zircon joined the December birthstone list in 1952.

Care

Zircon is 6.5 to 7.5 on the hardness scale and its facet edges can chip, so store it apart from other jewelry. Keep it out of prolonged strong sunlight. Clean with warm water and mild soap.
