The stone

Diamond is pure carbon arranged in the hardest crystal structure known, a 10 on the hardness scale. The name comes from the Greek adamas, “unconquerable,” and it has been April’s birthstone since the modern list was set in 1912. More in our gemologist’s guide to the twelve birthstones.

A gemologist’s note

A lab-grown diamond is diamond: the same carbon crystal, the same hardness and the same fire as a mined stone, grown in a controlled environment. This one is graded VS clarity and F or better color.

Care

Diamond is the hardest gemstone and can scratch other jewelry, so store it apart. Clean with warm water, mild soap and a soft brush to restore its brightness.
