The stone

Alexandrite is a rare variety of chrysoberyl that changes color with the light: teal to blue-green in daylight, purplish red under warm incandescent light. It was discovered in Russia’s Ural Mountains in the 1830s and named for the future Tsar Alexander II. More in our guide to the June birthstones.

A gemologist’s note

Mined alexandrite with a strong color change costs thousands of dollars per carat. Our gemologist chose lab-grown here because the color change, the reason anyone loves this stone, is fully present in the lab-grown crystal. It uses the same stone as our June birthstone charm and necklace, so the pieces can be worn as a set.

Care

Alexandrite is a hard 8.5 on the hardness scale. Bracelets take more knocks than necklaces, so take it off for workouts, housework and swimming. Polish with a soft jewelry cloth.
