The symbol

The yin yang, or taijitu, comes from Chinese philosophy and Taoism. It shows two complementary forces, each holding a seed of the other, and is long associated with balance rather than opposition. More in our guide to the yin yang symbol.

A gemologist’s note

At about 6mm this is a quiet piece, the kind you wear every day rather than for an occasion. It is plain polished gold with no stones to loosen.
