The design

A plain gold ball is one of the oldest earring forms there is, and one of the easiest to wear: it reads as a point of light rather than an ornament, so it works alone, in a second piercing or next to a gemstone stud. More in our guide to mixing and layering metals.

A gemologist’s note

Our gemologist picked 5mm because it is the size that shows from across a room without overwhelming a small earlobe. Solid gold is the point here; plating can wear through at the high spot over time.

Care

Polish with a soft jewelry cloth. Remove before swimming in chlorinated water, which can weaken gold alloys over time.
