The symbol

March's birthstone is a tradition that traces back to the breastplate of Aaron described in Exodus, where twelve stones represented the tribes of Israel. The modern calendar mapping was standardized in 1912 by the National Association of Jewelers (now Jewelers of America) and remains the reference list used across most of the English-speaking world. Worn close to the body, a birthstone ring functions as a personal sign, the wearer's name on the calendar.

About this stone

Aquamarine is a variety of beryl, colored by trace iron that produces its characteristic pale to medium blue, the color of clear seawater under sun. The largest historical deposits are in Brazil's Minas Gerais state, where in 1910 a single crystal weighing 110 kilograms was recovered, the largest gem-quality aquamarine ever found. Most aquamarine on the market is heat-treated to deepen the blue, an industry-standard treatment that has been used for over a century. The stone is 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale, hard and durable for daily wear. Curated by a certified gemologist.

Care and wear

Aquamarine is durable for daily wear. Remove before exposure to chlorinated pools or harsh chemicals. Clean with mild soap and warm water, dried with a soft cloth.

Common questions
